 Women's Murder Club

(October 2nd, 2007. - Editor)          Paula Newsome (Little Miss Sunshine), Aubrey Dollar (Point Pleasant), Tyrees Allen (Alias), Angie Harmon (Law & Order), Laura Harris (24), Elizabeth L. Ho and Rob Benedict (Threshold) star, in the one hour drama series Women's Murder Club, airing Fridays on ABC.

Based on James Patterson’s best-selling novels of the same name, The Women’s Murder Club follows four working women in San Francisco who combine their various professional talents to solve murder cases. Police Lt. Lindsay Boxer (Harmon) counts on her friends, Jill (Harris), a district attorney, Claire (Newsome), a medical examiner and Yuki (Ho), a reporter to find the piece of information that will crack a tough case. Each woman is successful in her own field, but because of their unique friendship, they realize that pooling their resources during investigations leads to undiscovered clues and answers in both work and their personal lives.

This sharing of information and talents between friends to solve cases and catch bad guys might be the stuff of good television, but I would think that any group of government employees who are ignoring protocol and procedure to take justice into their own hands the way this group did in the pilot episode, would find themselves headed for legal trouble of their own. That having been said, if what you want is a light and interesting mystery drama with an ensemble cast to add some drama and some romance, this show is for you. The nearly all-female cast will appeal to the mostly female audience of television, as they are all positive and interesting characters who enjoy a variety of successes in their personal and professional lives.

Angie Harmon seems to have taken care not to be billed as the outright star of this series even though she is clearly the standout among the cast. The camera loves this woman and no matter what role she plays on the small screen, she looks great doing it. Her good looks don't interfere with her ability to play a tough San Francisco cop, as she demonstrates in the first episode when her character is involved in a manhunt that ends with a shooting. A lot of other actresses would have had trouble pulling that off, but Harmon does it easily and then follows that with great dialogue and a sensitive performance that has us witnessing a much sifter side to her character.

If the writers take the high ground with this series and keep their characters contributing to the professional successes of each other, this series has a chance. If they follow the path towards vigilante justice foreshadowed in the pilot episode, I think the audience will turn away from this series. There is enough here for a good drama just in exploring these complex characters and their relationship and occupations. I'm looking for this series to keep it upbeat and on the right side of the law.
